My drawing mentor E. Michael Mitchell at Cal Arts passed away just this past year. Due to the recent news about J.D. Salinger passing away at age 91, I thought I would give a little background about the cover of “Catcher In The Rye”. One of Mike’s most well known pieces is the cover drawing he did for J.D.’s “Catcher in the Rye”. Mike was good friends with J.D. Salinger and influenced some of his writings.

In the short, “De Daumier-Smith’s Blue Period” from the book “Nine Stories”, Salinger’s short story is based on Mike’s when he was working as an instructor for correspondence art academy, “The Famous Artists School”.

STILLNESS: MOTION, GROUP EXHIBITION IN LOS ANGELES

Stillness: Motion involves three artists, Ayuna Collins, Jon Gomez, and Chris Wilson, all responding to the influence of their common teacher, E. Michael Mitchell (1920-2009). This curation specifically is in conversation with three series of lost work, that may be found in issues 13, 21, and 34 of the now defunct Lithopinion. The curation explores intergenerational conversation, specifically making connections between his work, evidenced in Lithopinion, and his pedagogy, evidenced in the work of these three former students.

Opening reception: Friday, February 5th, 7pm
Closing reception: Friday, March 12th, 7pm
