While going through all the surf shacks features on the Indoek site, I came across director, Jess Bianchi. In the article he mentions the feature film he directed called Given. I took a look at the trailer and was immediately transfixed.
Given is the simple yet powerfully contemplative story of a unique family legacy come full circle. Told through the visceral experience of a 6 yr. old, Given follows legendary surfers Aamion and Daize Goodwin (their Instagram is pretty awesome) from their island home of Kauai through 15 different countries in the quest for surf and to fulfill a calling handed down through generations.
There is also a children’s book that was created to pair with the movie. Such a great idea. The book was written by Tamara Burnstock and illustrated by Filipa Edgehill.
The premise of the book is this: Six year old Given and his family set out on a quest to follow the legend of the Big Fish. For years his father told him the tale as it was passed down from all the fathers before him.
Given and his family leave their little island of palm trees to follow the Big Fish’s trail across the seas. They meet beekeepers and snake dancers, sleep on sandy beaches and play on ice rocks. Given watches and learns for he knows he too would one day have to search for his own Big Fish.
This is a story of a unique family legacy come full circle. A story of finding home wherever you may be.
