Learning how to draw a scorpion becomes easier when you treat it as a sequence of changing joints rather than one complicated outline. The tail bends through several rigid sections, the pincers open at specific angles and each leg changes direction as it reaches the ground.
I will draw from a top-down or slightly angled reference so the main parts remain visible. A perfectly symmetrical scorpion may work as a symbol or tattoo design, but an observed animal will contain overlaps, uneven spacing and small differences between its two sides.
There is no need to construct the scorpion from circles and ovals. I follow the visible edges, compare the angles and allow my corrections to remain as thought lines.
Choose a reference that shows the joints
A top-down photograph is useful for understanding how the legs and pincers surround the body. A slightly lower view will show more depth in the shell and tail, but some legs may overlap.
Choose an image in which the tail does not completely cover the body. It should be possible to follow most of the segments from the stinger to the abdomen.
Look for clear lighting that separates the scorpion from the ground. A cast shadow can also help you understand which legs are raised and which touch the surface.
Scorpion species vary considerably. Some have broad pincers and relatively narrow tails, while others have smaller pincers and heavier tails. Follow one specific animal rather than combining features from several references.
If you are observing a living scorpion, keep a safe distance and do not handle it for the sake of a drawing. A photograph is completely appropriate for a close study.

Begin with the sting
Start at the end of the tail.
Look at the dark point of the sting and observe the direction in which it curves. Draw that short, sharp change first.
Behind the sting is a thicker bulb-like section. Rather than enclosing it as a generic shape, follow one visible edge from the point and around the swelling form. Then return along the opposite side.
This small area establishes the direction of the complete tail. If the sting points inward, outward or toward the viewer, the surrounding segments must respond to that orientation.
Do not make it excessively large simply because it is the most familiar feature. Compare it with the width of the nearest tail segment before continuing.
A second line can correct the curve if needed. Keep the earlier mark. Closely repeated lines around the sting can create a sharp, active edge.
Follow the tail one joint at a time
From the base of the sting, find the next visible segment.
Observe the angle of its upper edge and where that edge changes direction. Draw only that section, then move to the next.
Each tail segment is connected, but the joins prevent the tail from behaving like a smooth hose. A segment may widen toward one end, narrow at the connection or overlap the piece behind it.
Continue following the same side of the tail toward the body. Once this route is established, return to the sting and draw the opposite edge.
Compare the width at every change. The tail generally becomes heavier as it approaches the body, but perspective may compress or enlarge individual sections.
If the tail curls over itself, stop at the overlap. Resume the hidden edge only where it becomes visible again. Do not draw through the crossing.
A believable scorpion tail depends on these directional changes. Adding stripes across a smooth curve will not create the same articulated structure.
Let the tail arrive at the body
The tail connects to the rear of the abdomen, which is broader and flatter than the segments leading into it.
Look at the point where the tail stops curving freely and begins to settle into the body. Draw the visible outer edge on one side, then compare it with the other.
The abdomen contains a sequence of plates. From above, these may appear as divisions crossing the body, but they should respond to its width and perspective.
Do not begin by drawing every division. Establish the outside edges and the largest value changes first.
If the scorpion is turning, one side of the abdomen may appear narrower. Some plates may also disappear beneath the raised tail.
Use broken lines to suggest the divisions. A darker shadow at one end of a plate may describe its overlap more convincingly than a complete stripe across the body.
The front section of the body is more compact and supports the legs and pincers. Allow it to emerge from the abdomen rather than attaching a separate head shape.

Use the pincers to establish the front
The scorpion’s pincers are modified appendages positioned in front of the walking legs. Their width, reach and angle vary between species.
Begin with the open space inside the nearest pincer. This gap often provides a clearer shape than the claw surrounding it.
Draw one inner edge toward the tip, then return along the opposing side. Allow the claw to narrow and change direction according to the reference.
Continue backward through the joints leading from the pincer to the body. Each section should respond to the next rather than forming one continuous curved arm.
Now place the second pincer by comparison. It may open more widely, point in another direction or appear smaller because it is farther away.
Avoid correcting the two sides into symmetry. Their differences can show how the scorpion is positioned on the ground.
The pincers should also relate to the tail. If both ends of the animal curve in exactly the same way, the pose may become decorative rather than observed. Look for opposing directions and allow them to create tension across the page.
Find the legs through their angles
A scorpion has four walking legs on each side, but you do not need to draw eight complete legs before checking the pose.
Begin with the leg whose path is easiest to follow. Find where it leaves the side of the body and observe the direction of its first visible section.
At the joint, stop and look again. Draw the next section according to its new angle. Continue until the leg reaches the ground.
Return to the body and choose another leg.
Some legs may extend outward, while others point forward or backward. A nearer leg may appear thicker, and a far leg may be partly hidden beneath the body.
Keep the legs angular. A repeated sequence of smooth curves will make them feel soft and boneless.
At the same time, avoid turning every joint into a sharp zigzag. Look at the reference for places where a section appears almost straight or where a joint produces only a small change.
Once the main legs are placed, count what remains visible. If one leg disappears entirely behind the body, leave it hidden. Knowledge of the anatomy should help you understand the pose, not force every part into view.
Allow the feet to meet the ground
The ends of the legs are small, but they determine whether the scorpion appears to stand, float or collapse.
Observe where each leg touches the ground. The final section may flatten, angle forward or become nearly lost in shadow.
Use short, definite marks for these contact points. They do not all need equal detail.
A few cast shadows beneath the feet can establish their height. If a leg is raised, its shadow may sit farther away. If it presses against the surface, the two may nearly meet.
Do not draw a continuous shadow around the entire animal. Separate patches will preserve the open spaces between the legs and keep the silhouette readable.
Build the shell with edges and reflected light
A scorpion’s surface can appear glossy, dusty, rough or nearly black depending on the species and lighting.
Begin with the largest dark areas. These may occur beneath the tail, between the legs or along one side of the body.
Leave selected highlights on the upper surfaces of the plates, pincers and tail segments. The contrast between these highlights and darker joints will reinforce the articulated structure.
With graphite or charcoal, use broader tone on the body and sharper accents at the joints. With pen, combine dark patches with directional hatching. With color, compare the warm and cool changes within the browns, blacks, reds or pale desert hues shown in your reference.
Avoid outlining every plate with equal strength. A hard outer edge can sit beside a softer interior division. Some parts may disappear into shadow while others catch a sharp reflection.
This variety keeps the exoskeleton from looking like a diagram.
Use texture selectively
Small hairs, bumps and surface markings can add interest, but they should not cover the drawing evenly.
Look for areas where texture helps distinguish one part from another. The pincers may have rougher edges, the body may contain mottled markings and the legs may carry a few projecting hairs.
Add these details where the reference makes them visible.
A few hairs crossing a clean contour can soften the edge. Irregular marks across a plate can show wear without hiding its direction.
If the texture begins to overpower the joints, return to the darkest overlaps and strengthen them selectively. The larger structure should remain understandable from a distance.
Keep the corrections in the drawing
A scorpion contains so many joints that some angles will change as you work.
When a leg needs to move, draw the corrected direction beside the first. If a tail segment needs more width, extend its edge. If a pincer opens too far, place another inner contour.
These thought lines suit the subject. They can suggest movement, reflection and the complexity of the shell.
Do not try to polish every part to the same level. Let the tail or pincers carry the strongest marks and allow some of the distant legs to remain open.
Understanding how to draw a scorpion comes from following one visible joint into the next. Begin with the sting, let the tail lead into the body and allow the pincers and legs to spread according to the actual pose.
