Learning how to draw a manta ray is really about learning to see its wingspan. The head, fins, central body and tail all belong to one continuous movement. If these parts are drawn separately, the manta ray can quickly begin to resemble a flat kite.
I prefer to draw the entire animal through connected observations. I look across the wings, notice how the head interrupts the front edge and follow the body as it narrows into the tail. I do not begin with geometric construction, and I do not erase every line that misses the mark. Those earlier marks are thought lines. They record the process of looking and often give the finished drawing more movement.

Find a reference with an uneven wingspan
An overhead photograph may seem like the easiest reference, but avoid choosing one in which the manta ray is perfectly centred and completely flat. A slightly angled view will give you more information about how the fins move through space.
One wing might appear broader because it is closer to the camera. The other may be raised, shortened or partly obscured by the water. This unevenness is useful. It gives you something specific to draw instead of forcing you to invent movement later.
Make sure you can see the head, both wingtips and at least part of the tail. Reflections and soft underwater edges are fine as long as the main proportions remain understandable.

Draw across the manta ray instead of around it
Before putting down a line, look from one wingtip to the other. Notice the distance between them and where the head sits within that span.
I begin at the front of the head and travel outward along the leading edge of one fin. I am not trying to produce a perfect curve. I am following the particular changes in direction shown in the reference. The edge may rise gradually, flatten for a moment and then turn toward the wingtip.
Once I reach the tip, I stop and return to the head. I then draw toward the opposite wingtip.
This second line is not a reversed copy of the first. I compare it with the reference as though I am drawing an entirely new edge. It may travel at a different angle, extend farther or turn more sharply.
The result may look unbalanced when isolated on the page. That is not necessarily a problem. A swimming manta ray is rarely presented as a perfectly symmetrical diagram. The differences between its fins help show whether it is turning, banking or moving past the viewer.
If I realise that a wing needs to extend farther, I add another contour. I do not remove the first one. Several closely related lines can make the flexible fin feel as though it is changing position in the water.
Let the rear edge complete the movement
With the front of the wingspan established, I return to one wingtip and study the trailing edge.
This part of the fin often follows a different rhythm. It may sweep inward gradually, change direction near the body or form a slight indentation before meeting the base of the tail.
I draw the rear edge back toward the centre, then repeat the process on the other side. Once again, I resist the urge to make the two sides match.
The space between the leading and trailing edges determines the weight of the fins. If this space becomes too narrow, the manta ray will look thin and pointed. If it becomes too wide without any variation, the animal may look stiff.
Rather than correcting the entire outline, I return to the specific area that feels wrong. Sometimes extending a wingtip is enough. In other cases, the rear edge needs to turn inward later so the fin has more breadth.
At this stage, I step back from the sketchbook. The drawing should already suggest a manta ray through the wingspan alone. Details will not rescue an outline that has lost the animal’s main movement.
Allow the head to interrupt the silhouette
The head sits between the fins, but it should not look like a separate object attached to them.
Look closely at how the front edge changes as it approaches the centre. The manta ray’s cephalic lobes project on either side of the mouth. Depending on the angle, they may resemble curved flaps, short extensions or divided points.
I draw these directly from the reference rather than exaggerating them into horns. One may be more visible than the other. If the head is turning, they may overlap or appear unequal in length.
The eyes are positioned toward the sides of the head and are often much less prominent than beginners expect. I usually place them with small, definite marks after the head is working. Large eyes can change the character of the animal and pull attention away from the wingspan.
The central body should feel heavier than the fins surrounding it. A change in line weight or a small area of value can help show this thickness without enclosing it in another outline.
Follow the body until it becomes the tail
The tail should feel like the final continuation of the body rather than a line attached afterward.
Look through the centre of the manta ray from the head toward the rear. This direction may not run vertically down your page. If the animal is turning, the body and tail may travel diagonally or curve away.
I draw the tail with one long mark whenever possible. Near its base, I may add a second edge to show width, but I allow this to disappear as the tail narrows.
A long tail needs room. If it leaves the page, I let it leave. Forcing it to curl back into the composition can make the movement feel artificial.
The tail can also be partly obscured or softened by the water. You do not need to sharpen a feature simply because you know it exists.
Use shading to keep the manta ray from looking flat
Once the main drawing is established, I look for the largest difference between light and dark.
The upper surface may appear dark against luminous water, but it is rarely one completely even tone. Reflected light, natural markings and the changing angle of the fins break up the surface.
I place the broadest value first. With graphite or charcoal, I use the side of the material and allow the texture of the paper to remain visible. With pen, I group marks together and let them travel in the direction of the fins. With colour, I begin with the largest shift rather than trying to match every underwater reflection.
The central body can usually carry more weight than the outer fins. As a wing turns toward the light, I allow the value to open. As it turns away, I may strengthen the edge or deepen the surrounding tone.
Not every part of the outline needs to remain visible. A wing can disappear into dark water and reappear closer to the tip. A pale edge can be described by shading the water beside it rather than tracing it with a dark line.
This variation is what makes the manta ray feel as though it belongs underwater.
Make the water part of the drawing
I do not add bubbles or decorative waves automatically. Instead, I observe what the surrounding water is doing in the reference.
A few broken reflections may cross the back. A darker patch of water may clarify one wing while the other dissolves into the background. Soft directional marks can reinforce the path of the animal without becoming a separate illustration of the ocean.
Leave open space in front of the manta ray if it is moving across the page. This gives the animal somewhere to travel. Crowding the head against the edge of the sketchbook can make even a well-drawn manta ray feel stationary.
Movement should still come primarily from the animal itself. One wing rising while the other dips will communicate more than dozens of lines drawn in the surrounding water. I explore this kind of observation further in my tutorial on how to draw movement.
When the drawing looks like a kite
If the finished manta ray looks more like a kite than an animal, I return to the wings.
The problem is usually not a lack of detail. The front and rear edges may be too straight, the wingtips may match too closely or the central body may not have enough weight.
I add another observation where it is needed. I may widen one fin, soften a pointed corner or shift the position of the head. I do not redraw everything.
Then I compare the two sides again. Even a small difference in angle can change the drawing from a flat symbol into an animal turning through water.
Once you understand how to draw a manta ray through its wingspan, you can work from almost any viewpoint. The proportions will change, but the same connected movement remains. The fins lead into the body, the body continues into the tail and every line contributes to the direction of the animal.
