How to Draw Sea Animals: Movement, Shape and Texture

A sea animal drawing becomes much more convincing when the animal appears to belong in water. The body may be streamlined, suspended, drifting, crawling across the bottom, or folding around a current. Even a simple ocean animal drawing benefits from showing how that creature moves through its environment.

I approach a shark differently from an octopus, and an octopus differently from a seal. Instead of forcing every subject into the same construction method, I look for the movement that makes that animal recognizable. The direction of a tail, the sweep of a flipper, the compression of a jellyfish bell, or the reach of a tentacle can carry more information than a page of small details.

How to draw sea animals by following the water

On land, I can usually read an animal’s weight through its feet. Underwater, that relationship changes. A sea animal can rotate, rise, descend, turn toward the viewer, or disappear into dark water without touching a visible surface. I therefore begin by asking where it has come from and where it is going.

I lightly mark that route across the page before drawing the outer edge. The mark might be a long arc for a dolphin, a broad turn for a manta ray, or several directions radiating from an octopus. It is not an anatomical line. It is a record of travel, pressure, and momentum. The body then has a reason to bend the way it does.

Before drawing the animal, I try to understand what the surrounding water is asking its body to do.

For an easy sea animal drawing, choose a clear side view with one readable direction. A shark cruising horizontally, a seal turning toward the surface, or a sea turtle gliding with one front flipper raised will teach you more than a complicated photograph filled with overlapping animals.

Different bodies leave different trails

Tail-driven swimmers

Fish and sharks push their tails from side to side, so I look for a horizontal S-curve through the body. Dolphins and whales move their flukes up and down. Their path often feels like a series of rising and falling arcs. That distinction changes the gesture even when the animals share a similarly streamlined silhouette.

Flippers, wings, and broad surfaces

A sea turtle’s front flippers can sweep like long paddles while the rear pair helps with control. Rays appear to fly through the water, but different species may flap or ripple the broad fins along their sides. Seals and sea lions fold, extend, and turn their flippers as the spine curves through the swim. I compare the angle of those surfaces before refining the body.

Pulsing, drifting, and jetting

A jellyfish contracts its bell and then relaxes into a drift. Squid can move with fins or propel themselves by jetting water. These animals may not have an obvious face leading the pose, so their direction comes from compression, trailing forms, and the way soft edges respond to the current.

Crawling, gripping, and reaching

Crabs, lobsters, starfish, and octopuses give me a different problem. Their movement spreads across several limbs and often meets rock, sand, or coral. I draw the contact points early. With an octopus, I look at the mantle and eye placement first, then treat each arm as its own changing path rather than a repeated wavy line.

The silhouette should identify the animal

When a marine animal drawing is not reading clearly, I fill the subject as one dark shape. This removes texture and exposes the proportions. A dolphin and shark may look similar at a glance, but their snouts, dorsal fins, tails, and body transitions are different. A shark’s tail is vertical, while a dolphin’s flukes extend horizontally.

The same test works for a sea turtle’s long front flippers, a ray’s winglike outline, a seal’s tapered body, and a seahorse’s upright posture. If the silhouette feels generic, adding eyes, markings, or scales will not solve it. I return to the largest lengths, angles, and negative spaces.

A useful warm-up is to make six black thumbnails, each no larger than a thumbprint. Try a shark, dolphin, turtle, octopus, jellyfish, and crab. If another person can recognize most of them without interior detail, the major decisions are doing their job.

Treat empty water as part of the pose

Open water gives the drawing its direction. I pay attention to the triangular spaces between a turtle’s flippers and shell, the gaps between octopus arms, and the wedge of water between a shark’s tail and body. These empty shapes are often easier to compare than the anatomy itself.

I also avoid placing every animal perfectly level in the center. A ray entering from one edge, a whale descending into darker water, or a crab partly hidden behind a rock creates a stronger sense of encounter. A few strands of sea grass, suspended particles, bubbles, or a patch of shadow can clarify depth without turning the background into a separate project.

Use texture as evidence, not decoration

Surface marks should explain the form or identify the species. I simplify most of the animal, then allow one area to carry sharper information.

  • Smooth skin: Use broad value changes and restrained edges on dolphins, whales, and many sharks.
  • Scales: Let scale direction follow the round body instead of covering it with a flat grid. My guide to drawing fish scales shows this more closely.
  • Shells and plates: Map the larger divisions of a turtle shell or crab body before adding cracks, spots, or scratches.
  • Suckers and folds: Place a few carefully around the turning underside of an octopus arm rather than repeating identical circles.
  • Transparency: Build a jellyfish with overlapping values, soft lost edges, and a few firmer boundaries. A hard outline around everything makes it feel solid.

Make the page feel like an encounter

Rather than lining up unrelated sea creatures, I like to build a page around one moment. A larger animal establishes the encounter. Two or three smaller studies show how it turned or changed shape. A close view of a fin, eye, shell edge, or sucker records something I could not explain in the main drawing.

A habitat mark can locate the animal without becoming a full underwater scene. I might add the edge of a reef, the shadow beneath a ledge, a few vertical strands of kelp, or the rippled light seen near the surface. A short note about depth, behavior, size, or water conditions gives the page another layer of observation. This is where sea animal drawing overlaps with nature journaling and wildlife sketching.

Work from references that reveal the body

Many ocean animals are difficult to observe for long, so I combine references when I can. One photograph may show the silhouette clearly, another may explain the flipper attachment, and a short video may reveal how the animal actually moves. I use those sources to understand the subject rather than combining unrelated details into an impossible pose.

Aquarium photographs can be useful, but glass, water, and wide-angle lenses may distort proportions. Video frames are often blurry, yet that blur can preserve a better gesture than a perfectly sharp identification photo. I prefer a reference with a specific turn or action over one that presents the animal as a flat diagram.

  • Draw one sea turtle gliding, turning, surfacing, and feeding on the same page.
  • Make a study of one octopus arm changing direction, pressure, and contact.
  • Pair an opaque animal with a transparent one, such as a crab and jellyfish.
  • Draw a ray from above, below, and at a steep angle to practice foreshortening.
  • Build a reef scene around one focal animal and simplify everything farther away.
  • Use only three values to show a whale descending from bright surface water.

Keep the ocean connected to the animal

The most useful question is not whether every scale, sucker, or shell plate is finished. It is whether the animal’s body makes sense in water. A clear route of movement, a specific silhouette, and a few well-chosen surface details can make even a loose sketch feel alive.
